Introduction:

“I hear that some people are born into this world with a special gene. Buried deep in their DNA, perhaps undetectable by technology, there is a predisposition to come out of the womb saying “Can we get a horse?” Not all people who ride horses have this gene, but you know if you do. It causes one’s heart to beat in a different rhythm when you smell the leather of a a used saddle. It drives someone to put horse statues on the mantle for no apparent reason. Eyes of the people with this gene search the fields that pass by the car window, sorting through the cows and goats to land longingly on the sorrel grazing quietly on the hillside. If you have this gene you will not stop until you hear the heartbeat of a special horse, even if it takes a lifetime. I believe I have this gene, and this is my story.”
